life with seizure disorder

I started having seizures 12 1/2 years ago. I had a seizure( the first that I'm aware of) on my way to work. At least then, I had insurance from work. I started taking Tegretol. I had absence seizures and Petite Mal seizures. After about three years, I had a different insurance plan that my doctor didn't take, so I had to find a new doctor. This time I needed a referral. My Primary care doctor wouldn't give me one because as he said it wasn't necessary. I had to find urgent care centers that would renew my medication. Several wouldn't. I was still trying to get a referral to see a neurologist. Finally, about 9 months later I went to a different doctor for a physical and to get a referral. At the very end of the physical exam, I had an absence seizure. The doctor told me, she had seen no reason for the referral until I had the absence seizure. The neurologist I saw is the first one to set up regular EEG's and MRI's. I stayed with this doctor until 3 years ago. At this time, I didn't have regular insurance from work nor could I afford private insurance, if I could even qualify. Most insurers refused to even talk with me about obtaining insurance. I was living with health plans, that were not regular insurance. I didn't qualify for Medicaid. Three years ago, my doctor must have decided not to accept any my health plan, without notice. I found out when I called to make an appointment and was told the doctor would no longer be seeing me. After another 8 months I found a local hospital based insurance that I could qualify for. My current doctor is very good. I started taking Keppra about 1 1/2 years ago. I still have huge medical bills. Some I have paid off over time, but I had to declare bankruptcy about 9 months ago. I had combined bills that were well over $10,000. This was just one part of my story. I am happy to say, I've been seizure free for about 16 months.
