Greetings, one and all. If you have the misfortune to be associated with epilepsy there is a good chance you are taking some kind of drug for it. There are quite a few of them, and it might be worth your while to know how they do what they do.

Many o the main ones — phenobarbitol,tegretol, dilantin, keppra — all work by raising in your brain the level of something called Gamma amino butyric acid, or GABA. GABA is the same thing that causes drunkenness due to ethyl alcohol. It basically "shuts things down," and with the machinery shut down it cannot create a seizure. .

Other anticonvulsant drugs such as Lamictal work by changing the operation of something called the sodium/potassium pump in the brain. The sodium/potassium pump is required to maintain proper brain activity, so by altering the brain activity of a person with epilepsy seizures can be affected considerably.

    Trileptal is a gabaminergic drug. It is structured a lot like TEGRETOL, and helps reduce your seizures by increasing the amount of GABA in your brain. As I have posted on the site, just stopping seizures is important, certainly. What we need to do is get the brain to stop the action that creates the seizure, not slow down ALL ACTIVITY. In the latter case — which is what GABA does — you're talking about lower grades, lower test scores, worse decisions in everything. And that can't help anybody.

    You forgot to mention the benzodiapines which also increase gamma amino butyric acid (Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax etc.) As high as their potential for addiction, they are also prescribed for epilepsy.
